How do I retire?

As a member of the LGPS, you have a number of options as to when to retire:

  • Normal Retirement
  • Early Retirement
  • Late Retirement
  • Ill Health Retirement
  • Redundancy/Efficiency Retirement
  • Flexible Retirement

You will receive an annual pension, payable for life, an automatic tax fee lump sum (if you have membership before 1 April 2008) and the option to exchange pension for tax free cash.

For details of how your pension will be calculated and the lump sum option available to you, please refer to the Calculating your Benefits page and/or Commutation page.

You should discuss your retirement date and type of retirement with your employer at your earliest opportunity.  They will also confirm the amount of notice you have to give.

Procedure

When your retirement date has been agreed, your employer will inform the Pension Section.

The Pension Section will calculate your pension benefits as soon as the Payroll Section has confirmed the pay details required to make the calculations.  They will then be forwarded to you, together with details of the option to convert some of your Annual Pension to a bigger lump sum.

Please note that your last pay in employment will usually need to be calculated before the Payroll Section can provide the details required, which may be after your date of termination.

At the same time as being provided with details of your Pension Benefits, you will be forwarded Forms to confirm your marital status and bank details.  You will need to submit your Birth Certificate and any other Certificates that apply when you return the Forms.

You will also need to complete a ‘Declaration Form’ to provide information about any other pension rights that you are entitled to receive (or are already receiving) so that a check can be made that your pension benefits comply with HM  Revenue & Customs (HMRC) rules.

Payment

When you have returned your Lump Sum Option, the Forms and relevant Certificates, arrangements will be made to pay your Lump Sum Retirement Grant into your Bank Account.  At the same time, details of your Pension will be forwarded to the Pension Payroll Section of the City and County of Swansea who will pay your Pension on the last banking day of each month.

Finally, you will be sent a letter confirming the final calculation of Pension Benefits payable when the whole process is completed.
