If you become permanently incapable of work by reason of ill health, you should contact your previous LGPS employer to ascertain whether your LGPS benefits can be paid immediately.
Left on or before 31 March 2008
An approved Independent Registered Medical Practitioner has to certify that you are permanently incapable of discharging efficiently the duties of your former local government employment because of ill-health or infirmity of mind or body
Left on or before 31 March 2014
An approved Independent Registered Medical Practitioner has to certify that you are permanently incapable of doing the job you were working in when you left the LGPS and you have a reduced likelihood of being capable of obtaining gainful employment within 3 years of applying for the benefit or by age 65, whichever occurs first.
Left on or after 1 April 2014
An approved Independent Registered Medical Practitioner has to certify that you are permanently incapable of doing the job you were working in when you left the LGPS and you have a reduced likelihood of being capable of obtaining gainful employment within 3 years of applying for the benefit or by normal pension age (equal to your state pension age or at least age 65), whichever occurs first.
Gainful employment is defined as ‘paid employment for not less than 30 hours per week for a period of not less than 12 months.
Please note; if approved, your LGPS benefits will be released without any ill health enhancement.
